LThe Art of Minimalism.
When it comes to financing our high seas adventure we are advocates of the minimalistic way of life originally championed in a netflix documentary called “Minimalism”. If you haven’t watched It I would recommend you do. It basically questions the role of money and objects in our daily life and how we are unconsciously conditioned by society to believe that more things and more money = more happiness. Having survived cancer, a stroke and a pandemic I can vouch for the fact that the amount of money you have in the bank becomes of little importance when you are staring down a life threatening illness. I look back now on the years I had on the hamster wheel thinking that all my problems would evaporate if I could just earn a bit more money. In fact, if you ask most people, regardless of their income, it is a commonly held belief that if we could just earn about 10 % more income we would be happy and comfortable. We then sacrifice time with our loved ones for more money in the hope of reaching this Nirvana like state. Unfortunately this can never be reached as the goal posts are continually moved by our society as new and more expensive status symbols are launched. This brings in the argument of needs versus wants. Do you need an IPhone 14? Or would a $30 prepaid mobile do everything that you need? Do you need a 27 bedroom, 16 bathroom house on the side of a hill when you only use 3 bedrooms and one bathroom? Du you need a Ferrari to drive to the shops to pick up the groceries? You do need a means of communication, a place to live and a means of transportation to get around. There is a big difference between what you WANT and what you actually NEED. For many families the real concern is how much money is left at the end of the month or, in my case, how much month was left at the end of the money. This is our discretionary income which we have to spend on ourselves and our loved ones. If you follow any of the mobile “life in a Van” instagram channels then you will have seen how if you drive down your monthly overheads then it becomes much easier to make ends meet and allows a much more relaxed lifestyle. Follow us on EVkitekat.com as we try to lower our transport, accomodation, food and energy costs as low as possible allowing us to survive on minimal income. Can we do it? Hell I don’t know but we will have a blast trying ! Stay tuned for updates and new episodes. Head on over to headhightackle.com.au and shop our range of unique problem solving products.
